The head often gets stuck in the wood, and it also has a propensity to bounce and fly off to toward the feet. That makes for hard work.Krns first attempt at remedying the situation was to bolt hockey pucks to both sides of a maul head. This effectively kept the tool away from the feet by bouncing it back up off the log. It also effectively killed the force needed to split the wood apart. Next he tried bolting heavy washers to one side of the head. This introduced the prying action that occurs after the head has struck wood. It worked.The only problem was that after popping off a piece of wood, the axe head would slide off, again endangering the lower extremities. So he welded studs to the thick end of the head to catch the wood and keep it atop the log it was splitting. Since then, the Leveraxes head has become a single solid piece of cast or forged metal.The final product is safer, requires less power, and is speedier at getting the job done.Rough theoretical calculations conclude that the Leveraxe is 30 times more powerful than a traditional axe as it hits the wood because of the added torque that is created by the counter weight, George says. Monster: In your book, Good Boss, Bad Boss, you cite a study conducted over the past 50 years that consistently shows a majority of workers say their boss is the most stressful part of their job. Sutton: This is a pattern across a series of studies, not just one.In particular, Gallup studies suggest that having a great CEO or working at a great company doesnt really matter that much what matters most is the person you work for directly.Its funny because we tend to focus on the one leader who runs the firm, but the better question is, What is the legacy the group of bosses that those leaders create or leave behind? Monster: You call out some of the characteristics of a bad boss talking too much, not listening, not respecting peoples time the list goes on. Sutton: The first big diagnostic is this inability to actually listen to people. One of the most amazing meetings Ive ever been to was a day-long session where the senior guy never shut up everyone grumbled in breaks. And then he pulled me aside and said, I know it looks like Im listening, but Im actually just reloading for what Im going to say next. He was a poster child for the issue. The company got him to retire early, in part because they couldnt take it any more. Even his clients complained about it. Sometimes companies can calculate the actual cost of maintaining a difficult boss it can be expensive. Ive known of cases where the bosss bonus was docked because of it. Monster: Women tend to be better listeners, by virtue of their social training and often more compassionate.Do women with those traits tend to be better bosses? Sutton:Theres good reason to believe that women are more attuned to others.But the disadvantage is often that women leaders are allowed less operating room. The idea about being perfectly assertive is knowing when to back off. Walking that line is more difficult for women who often have a narrower line to walk. Its the difference between a balance beam and walking a tightrope its easier to fall off the tightrope.Society gives women a narrower range in which to be seen as competent. Monster: Its human nature to hire in your own image which is a problem when a bad boss is doing the hiring.How can this be avoided? Sutton:Besides bringing in people with different skills and backgrounds, the test I always used to make was if they make you squirm, try to figure out why. Because one of the most well-documented findings of behavioral science is that the person we love the most is most like us. So a lot of it is getting other people involved in the decision-making process. But its not always bad to look for like people.In the early days, Google used a crazy hiring strategy if you were one of the smartest people on earth at computer sciences, they wanted you. And that was pretty smart. So if it strategically makes sense, thats fine. Monster:So how can HR help in these situations especially at smaller companies? Sutton:I would look at the background of the person what are the set of skills that differentiate them? And be sure that the right jobs are filled. Ive seen many start-ups that dont hire anyone who can do accounting. Its because they dont like accountants. The number of starts-ups that have gone under because of it is astounding. But we all stereotype as human beings. Monster:Theres no doubt that the recession has intensified workplace dynamics for employees and bosses. Sutton:You can see it people are wearing out. I was recently in a session with 12 CEOs of large, well-known companies. We started by going around the table and talking about whats on their mind. And many said, Gee, Im trying to figure out if I have the guts to hire, because things look good. But I just dont want to go thru another round of layoffs. And I think its a characteristic of good bosses to know that multiple rounds of layoffs are just not a good thing to do. Ive seen many bosses get depressed from their first layoff experience. But the best bosses need to be there for their people after a layoff thats when theyre needed most. I also encourage companies to conduct exit interviews theyre often hold valuable information. Monster:In your book, you point out that employees who are treated fairly and openly are often hit harder by a layoff and that they can react more dramatically. Sutton:The first layoff is always the most devastating.It goes back to the saying, No good deed goes unpunished. The better you treat them in the past the harder it is. In the process of implementing everything from pay cuts to layoffs, bosses should strive to provide realistic expectations to their staff.Something like what one CEO said, I cant promise there will be no layoffs, but theyre wont be any layoffs for 3 months.To me, that gives people some predictability and some compassion. It recognizes that going to work every day and waiting for the other shoe to fall is stressful. Its about prediction, understanding, control and compassion things Ive been writing about for 25 years. Monster: You talk about how wise bosses like a good fight can you define what is a good fight? Sutton: A good fight is where people argue over good ideas without impuning one anothers integrity and self esteem, in an atmosphere of mutual self-respect. Theres a great line from organizational theorist Karl Weickthat says people should argue as if theyre right and listen as if theyre wrong. The person I talk about a lot is Brad Birdat Pixar. He talked about creating a context where people felt comfortable challenging him in the moment. And he talked about how difficult it is when people lose trust in psychological safety and how hard it is to get it back. Thats especially important for creative work. Monster: How do you cultivate a good fighting mentality in an organization? Sutton: In the book, we have a list of ways to lead a good fight it starts by saying youre going to argue over something according to the rules and immediately pulling people out of the argument when they break the rules. At Intel, they actually teach classes in constructive confrontations. And going back to Brad Bird, you have to model it in the moment.When theres conflict, you manage it. And you have to help people learn when to stop fighting, join arms and go forward.Ive found that there are some people who are not very good at constructive conflict they cant take criticism. Youre probably best to just keep them out of the room, frankly. Monster: A great boss can make a difficult company more bearable. But how do difficult companies learn how to hire great bosses? Sutton: Even in the nastiest companies with the worst managers there are always pockets of good people. In those situations, its important where you place them. You create pockets of excellence and try to grow them. It comes back to the importance of the hiring process and the consequences of it. Its straight out of a chapter in my book bad is stronger than good. Companies are always searching for super stars, looking for the best possible employees. Of course you want to avoid hiring overly competitive and destructive people. But if you have any on staff, retrain them, put them on notice or terminate the employee. HR deals a lot with this dirty work they should be more appreciated. Remember to excentuate the positive and eliminate the negative in who you hire. The latter is more important than bringing in the stars. Edgy people are not necessarily destructive so check references. Its often difficult to tell in the hiring process.But managing the consequences of your hiring decisions is something that many companies should be more aggressive about. One of your first priorities after hearing of your impending layoff should be to work your contacts. Some of your best contacts will be in your current/former company, and thats why its important to spend your final days/weeks chatting extensively with your  internal contacts. Make a list of all your key contacts, whether internal or external, and work through it. Those are the questions many job seekers likely ask themselves at some point during their job searchespecially if its taking a while, or theyre unemployed and really needing to land something quickly. Just how long should a job search take? These guidelines can give you a good idea, plus offer some motivation to make it go faster: Run the numbers. The truth is that there is no one, right answer to this How long? question. It varies greatly from person to person, and job search to job search. There are a ton of factors to take into consideration, such as the current job market, the time of year, your level of experience, and the list goes on. But if youre hoping to get a better idea of whether a typical job search for someone in your situation should take three days, 30 days, or 300 days, this might help: according to some experts, it takes about one month of job searching for every $10,000 that you plan to earn. So if you’re looking to make $50,000 annually, it might take upwards of five months to find a job. (This isnt always the case!) Factor in the variables. Again, there are many things that can affect a job search and make it go faster (or slower) than you might have imagined. Things such as the state of the economy and the number of jobs in your area can play a major factor. If you’ve been out of work for a longer period of time, it could take longer, since employment gaps can be counted against you by a hiring manager. Other things to consider include the growth in your industry and your own flexibility as a job seeker (i.e., are you willing to accept a part-time job when you really want a full-time position?). Be honest with yourself- but maintain a positive attitude. A certain amount of your job search success comes not from potential employers, but from you. It’s up to you as the job seeker to actively search for employment as often as you possibly can. If you think that it’s going to take months to find a job, well, then it’s going to. Instead, have a more positive mindset that your job search will be successful- and swift. That means investing in your job search by creating quality job applications, making sure that your resume and cover letter are fantastic, and being proactive about networking. All of these can greatly improve your chances of getting hired faster. Here are some other tips to potentially help make your job search move faster: Improve yourself. Just because you’re job searching doesn’t mean that you can’t do other things, too. If you’re noticing that the jobs you want are slightly out of your reach, pinpoint what it would take for you to become a more qualified candidate. Maybe it’s updating your skills, creating more of an online social media presence, or even completing your degree. Taking the steps to make it happen can boost your chances of getting hired, and also keep you motivated to continue with your search. Search often. If you thought that you could search a couple of times a week for a job, think again. Job seekers who want to get hired now have to search every single day. Although that might seem like a drag, fresh job listings post daily, and waiting a day or two (or longer) to apply can greatly decrease your chances of being considered for the job. Be flexible. For example, an employee might be allowed to come in any time between 9 am and 11 am, and leave any time between 5 am and 7 pm. Or, they might be allowed to take off Friday if they agree to work Sunday. Alternative to a Traditional Work Week An alternative to the traditional 9 am to 5 pm, 40-hour traditional workweek schedule, flexible work schedules are becoming more and more common in the workforce. There are many job and freelance options that offer flexible schedules. Flexible schedules are especially popular at start-ups and smaller companies, where employees are allowed to choose the dates and times they work as long as they get all of their work done. A survey from YouGov.com reports that 69 percent of the Americans surveyed would prefer an earlier work schedule. Seventeen percent preferred an 8 am to 4 pm schedule, while 14 percent would like to work from 7 am - 3 pm. Almost 20 percent would prefer a later schedule. Twenty percent of millennials wouldn’t mind coming into work after 9 am and working into the evening. A later start time is slightly less popular among Gen X (19%) and those 55 and over (17%). Benefits for Employees Employees value flexible schedules as a way to balance work and non-work responsibilities. Flexible schedules are helpful for workers who are raising families, attending graduate school, commuting long distances, traveling, or balancing multiple jobs. Drawbacks for Employees Flexible schedules can sometimes make it difficult to connect with co-workers â€" especially if those coworkers also work non-traditional hours. Unless everyone on the team is on the same page, this can lead to less collaboration, more time working off the clock, and greater stress. Benefits for Employers Employers value flexible scheduling as a method for recruiting and retaining employees and for increasing job satisfaction and productivity. A flexible schedule also helps build trust between employees and their managers, as employees are often expected to manage their own schedules (with their employers supervision) and take ownership of getting the job done even while on an irregular schedule. When an employer provides the option for a flexible schedule, the schedule is approved by the employee’s supervisor based upon the needs of the workplace and the employee’s request for flexibility. Drawbacks for Employers Making flexible schedules work requires planning and organization â€" and managers who are trained to implement non-traditional work schedules. At least initially, this requires a bit more effort from staff to coordinate. There’s also the possibility that some workers might take advantage of an alternative schedule to put in less work. If you’re not on a punch-card system, it might be difficult to tell if your 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. employee shows up on time each day â€" especially if they’re the only one working on that particular schedule. On the other hand, more dedicated employees might wind up putting in more hours, tracking everyone down. That sounds good in theory, but it can also be a recipe for burnout. You don’t want your high performers carrying the rest of the team all the time. How to Ask Your Employer for a Flexible Schedule If you’re interested in changing your work hours, it’s important to be aware of both the pros and cons from your employer’s perspective. That means looking for ways to minimize the potential downside while emphasizing the benefits to the company. To make your case convincingly, do the following: Exceed expectations. Managers are more likely to give benefits like a flexible schedule to workers who are already top performers. Make sure you’re surpassing all your goals before you ask.  Suggest a pilot program. Don’t ask for a completely different schedule right off the bat. Try a smaller-scale version at first, to work out the kinks before you go full-time. As a bonus, this will also help you determine whether or not you like working on a different schedule â€" something you won’t really know until you try. Set goals. Coordinate with your manager to set expectations. Will you log on by a certain time each morning, even if they won’t be into the office for another two hours? Will you check in at certain times to evaluate progress and make sure the team’s needs are being met?Anticipate problems. Make sure your request fits your work style before you submit it. If you know that mornings are hard for you, don’t suggest coming in two hours early, for example. Also, think about what (and who) you need to get your job done. If your project partner comes in a 10 am, getting an early start might not make sense. Excel at your job. Once you have a flexible schedule, make sure that you get to keep it by doing your job to the best of your abilities. Keep your manager informed and meet your goals and you’ll be able to take full advantage of your working hours.

The Beret in U.S. Military Uniform History The Beret in U.S. Military Uniform History In the United States military, forces have worn distinctive uniform items for centuries to create a psychological advantage and boost their esprit de corps, but the military use of berets is a relatively recent phenomenon. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the Blue Bonnet became a de facto symbol of Scottish Jacobite forces.  The French Chasseurs alpins, created in the early 1880s, are recognized as the first regular unit to wear the military beret as their standard headgear. One of the reasons that the beret is attractive to the military as a uniform item is that they are cheap, easy to make in large numbers and can be manufactured in a wide range of colors.  From the soldiers view, the beret can be rolled up and stuffed into a pocket (or beneath a shirt epaulet) without damage, and it can be worn while wearing headphones. Military berets are usually pushed to the right to free the shoulder that bears the rifle on most soldiers (though some countrys armies mostly Europe, South America and Iran have influenced the push to the left). The widespread use of the beret among Western armies didn’t begin until the 20th century when French tank crews in World War I wore the small Basque version and a larger, floppier variety. United Kingdom and United States Beret History The military popularity of berets soared during the World War II era when various British units donned the headgear in several colors including a khaki brown variety adopted by Special Air Services troops and a maroon variety worn by Britain’s first airborne force, the Parachute Regiment, that became affectionately known as the “cherry berry.” Berets Debut in U.S. Military The first use of the modern beret in the U.S. military was in 1943 when an Army battalion of the 509th Parachute Infantry was given maroon berets by their British counterparts for their service in the war. Though it never stuck, the use of the beret started out as a headgear that designated a special service of the military member and it still continues to have that same designation somewhat.   The first widespread use of the headgear by U.S. forces came a few decades later, when a new Army Special Forces unit was developed.  They became the special organization that was trained for insurgency and counter-guerrilla warfare and began (unofficially) wearing a green variety in 1953. It took another eight years for the Army’s Special Forces - the “Green Berets” - to win presidential approval from John F. Kennedy to make their headgear official, and in 1961 the green beret of the US Army Special Forces was formally adopted. In the 1970s, Army policy allowed local commanders to encourage morale-enhancing uniform distinctions, and the use of berets boomed. Armor personnel at Fort Knox, Ky., wore the traditional British black beret, while U.S. armored cavalry regiments in Germany wore the black beret with a red and white oval.   Troops of the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, N.C., started wearing the maroon beret in 1973, while at Fort Campbell, KY, the trend exploded with post personnel wearing red, military police donning light green, and the 101st Airborne Division taking light blue as their color.  At  Ft.
